Camp Agape is a summer program organized by Milal Mission that provides children with disabilities, a safe and supportive environment to enjoy the outdoors, engage in recreational activities, and build relationships with volunteers and other campers.

When the pandemic hit, we had to completely transform the camp from an in-person experience to a fully virtual one. As someone with expertise in TV production, the director of the program, asked me to help with the transition. It was a daunting task that required a complete overhaul of how the camp operated. We had to turn an office space into a TV studio, create a broadcast toolkit from scratch, and produce a promotional video that would keep our kids excited.

We also had to decide on the number of cameras to install, where to place them, how to set up lighting, and how to create a sense of engagement and community through a computer screen. Every aspect of the camp had to be rethought and restructured to work in a virtual environment. We quickly realized that everyone involved in the project, from the director to the counselors, had to be trained and become more tech-savvy.

Despite the challenges, we were determined to make it work. The online camp provided a valuable opportunity for kids with disabilities to engage with one another and participate in fun activities despite the challenges presented by the pandemic. With over 100 kids from six cities and three different countries, the virtual format allowed for more inclusivity and accessibility than ever before. Children who may have felt isolated or left out during the pandemic were able to connect with others and engage in socialization and skill-building activities. Overall, the online camp was a rewarding experience for all involved, providing a sense of community and joy during a challenging time.
